"Christina", 14x11", mixed media on wood panel, is a symbolic portrait of my fellow yoga student Christina, who gave off the most wonderful vibrations. The spirals are extruded acrylic paint.

Leila's Rainforest

"Leila's Rainforest" was commissioned by my granddaughter Leila. I used reference photos to create a fantasy rainforest. 40x30" acrylic on canvas.

"Persephone", 36x60", acrylic on canvas. My experience of being married very young is here symbolized by the myth of Persephone, who dwelt in the underworld, a captive of Hades, until her mother negotiated to have her released half of each year. Persephone ate a pomegranate seed while visiting the underworld, and that mistake caused her imprisonment. The 3-headed dog Cerberus guards the underworld, but lets her pass at the beginning of spring and fall.

"Robyn With Bird"

"Robyn With Bird", 11x14" (?), acrylic on canvas, is a portrait of my sister Robyn, based on a photo she sent me in an email. I added the patterns and bird.

Ellen McCormick Martens: I do abstract collage, mostly using paper that I paint and print myself. I also use stencils and my own carved rubber stamps. I grew up in Green Bay, Wisconsin, and decided to be an artist at age 12. I began to paint full-time in 1996, after working as a computer typesetter for 16 years. At first I did a lot of brightly-colored landscapes with flattened shapes and space. I love light through trees, and painted a lot of that subject. You can see some of this work on my older blog, ellenmccormickmartens.blogspot.com. From bright, flat landscapes I moved on to beaded collage portraits of myself and my family, then to geometric zodiac paintings, and on to the abstract collage work I am currently creating. I hope that my spirit comes through my work. I believe that each human being is immortal, incarnated many times, and that we keep learning and perfecting ourselves.
